LONDON, JAN 13 - There are five - four women and one man, Keir Starmer, who at the moment appears however favored - the suitors who are still in the running today, after the deadline for submitting applications, for the succession to the resigned Jeremy Corbyn in the British Labor leadership after the election blow suffered in December.
The first step, namely the support of at least 10% of Labor MPs and MEPs (22), was passed by three outgoing shadow ministers (Starmer, Rebecca Long-Bailey and, in extremis, Emily Thornberry); as well as two deputies from the internal opposition in Corbyn: pro-EU centrist Jess Phillips and center-left brexiteer Lisa Nandy. Instead, a fourth shadow minister, Clive Lewis, who would have been the first black leader of a large party in the United Kingdom, has withdrawn for the insufficient support of his parliamentary colleagues.
If one of the running female figures won, she would be the first woman to be a full-fledged top of the political force.
