WELLINGTON, JAN 4 - About 1,000 people have come to the rescue today in New Zealand to try to rescue a flock of whales beached on the Coromandel peninsula, in the North Island of the country.
The volunteers responded to a request for specialist assistance launched by a group of environmentalists from the Jonah Project for the protection of marine animals.
Three of the 10 short-finned pilot whales are already dead and the other seven will have to wait for the high tide mid-afternoon on Saturday (local time) to try to put them back into the sea.
