ROME, NOVEMBER 27 - In a new report on widespread Egypt today, Amnesty International has accused the Supreme State Security Prosecutor of regularly abusing anti-terrorism regulations to cancel guarantees on due process and prosecute thousands of people who have criticized the government in a peaceful way. The report, entitled "State of permanent exception", reveals what Amnesty denounces as "the complicity of the Supreme Prosecutor in enforced disappearances, arbitrary deprivation of liberty, ill-treatment and torture".
"The prosecutor has imposed long prison terms on thousands of people based on invented accusations and clearly depriving prisoners of the right to a fair trial," the organization adds.
