BERLIN, SEPTEMBER 1 - In a memorial ceremony commemorating the start of World War II exactly 80 years ago, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier asked for "forgiveness" for the Polish victims of Nazism and stressed "I bow" in front to their memory. The sentences were spoken before the Polish president Andrzej Duda in Wielun, Poland, where on September 1, 1939, Nazi Germany launched the attack that marked the beginning of the world conflict. "I bow to the victims of the Wielun attack. I bow to the Polish victims of the German dictatorship. And I ask forgiveness," Steinmeier said.
