NEW YORK, AUGUST 19 - Twitter has detected and canceled 936 accounts originating in China and focused on the situation in Hong Kong: the accounts aimed to sow "political discord" and manipulate the prospect of protests. This was stated by Twitter in a note, underlining that the investigations carried out showed "reliable evidence" of the fact that the activity of the accounts was the result of "a coordinated operation supported by a state".
Facebook also removed fake Chinese accounts that targeted the Hong Kong protests. "Even if the people behind this activity have tried to hide their identity, our investigations have found links with individuals associated with the Chinese government," Facebook writes in a note.
