Earthquakes: Philippines, the dead rise to 8

MANILA, 27 JULY - The death toll of eight strong earthquakes that last night struck some islands in the Luzon Strait in the northern Philippines has increased to eight dead and about 60 wounded: the first, of magnitude 5.7 ( and not 6 as previously reported, according to the American Geophysical Institute (USGS), was recorded at 1:24 local time while the second, of magnitude 4.6, followed at 3:19.
Both were located at a depth of 10 km and respectively 21 and 22 km east of Itbayat, a town in the Batan islands with a population of around 2,800 people.
Some homes have been completely destroyed and as a precaution the authorities have advised more than 1,000 residents not to return to their homes due to possible further shocks during the night.
