Europol has announced that a cyber-gang that has used malware to steal 100 million euros from over 40 thousand users, including businesses and financial institutions, has been vanquished. The complex police operation was conducted in the United States, Bulgaria, Germany, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. The gang infected computers with GozNym malware, which captured online banking data to access victims' current accounts.
Europol has revealed the details of the operation, stating that the investigation is unprecedented, especially in terms of cross-border cooperation. Ten gang members must respond to a number of crimes in the US, including money theft and money laundering through US and foreign bank accounts. Among the other members also the 'head' of the network, in addition to his technical assistant, stopped in Georgia.
Five Russian citizens are wanted, including the one who developed the GozNym malware and supervised its development and management.
