ROME, MAY 4 - The King of Thailand, 66-year-old Maha Vajiralongkorn, who succeeded his father Bhumibol Adulyadej in 2016, was crowned this morning in Bangkok: the king's coronation, known as Rama X, took place on the first of three days of elaborate ceremonies to be held in the capital, in the presence of foreign leaders and tens of thousands of Thais along the roads and the river that crosses the metropolis.
The crown - studded with diamonds and weighing 7.3 kg - was given to him by the Brahmin chief, a Hindu priest who played a leading role in today's Buddhist-Hindu ceremony.
Only a few days ago, Rama X formalized his marriage with Suthida Na Ayutthaya, a former Thai Airways flight attendant who had been promoted to his security service for a few years. The new queen (41 years old) is the fourth wife of the sovereign, who resides for most of the year in a villa in Germany.
