Brazil: heavy rain causes disruption in Rio

ROME, 04 MAR - The municipality of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, declared the state of alert yesterday because of heavy rains that hit the city, which caused flooding and inconvenience during Carnival Sunday.
The state of warning weather was branched out for forecasts that indicated further heavy rains, lightning and gusts of wind.
According to the Brazilian portal G1, 28 floods were recorded in the city, mainly in the south. The Civil Defense has activated alarm sirens in 54 communities, with 12 registered landslides and damage to three buildings due to collapse, with an injured person. The Bonsucesso hospital was also flooded.
The storm began as thousands of people marched on the streets of the south and north of the city, on the occasion of the traditional Rio Carnival. In the area of the Ipanema district, people continued to celebrate with the flooded Avenida Vieira Souto street. However, the parade ended earlier than expected.
